A Matter of Trust: Solving Customer Challenges, One Truck at A Time

Behind every new truck delivery is a conversation.

Sometimes it's straightforward, simple. Other times it involves understanding a customer's business inside and out, challenging assumptions, exploring different options and arriving at a solution that keeps people, freight and industries moving.

It's this approach that has helped Webster Trucks' Shane Hilder become one of Tasmania's most respected truck sales professionals.

A long-time member of the Isuzu dealer network and a past Isuzu Team Elite Salesperson of the Year, Shane has built his reputation by building lasting, meaningful relationships and genuinely understanding the businesses behind them.

Whether he's helping operators navigate vehicle specifications or supporting industries working in some of Australia's toughest environments, his focus remains the same: finding the right outcome for every customer.

We caught up with Shane to talk about memorable customer stories, building long-term relationships and why great customer service never ends when the keys are handed over.

Q: Looking back over your time with Isuzu Trucks, is there a customer success story that stands out as particularly memorable?

Tasmania might be a small market, but our trucks work in some incredibly demanding conditions.

One story that's always stayed with me involves the Australian Antarctic Division. Their Australian-based headquarters are only about half an hour from our Hobart dealership, and over many years we've worked closely with them to specify and build heavily modified Isuzu trucks for Antarctic operations.

I was told about a group of researchers who were caught in a severe blizzard and took shelter inside an Isuzu FTS Crew Cab. They kept the engine running to power the heater while they waited for conditions to improve. Eventually the truck stalled after the air intake became completely blocked with snow, but only after keeping the crew safe long enough for the storm to clear and rescue crews to reach them.

I remember receiving the call afterwards. The team simply wanted to say thank you because, without that level of reliability, the outcome could have been very different.

That's a story that reminds you what's really at stake when you help customers choose the right vehicle.

Q: When a customer comes to you with a complex transport challenge, where do you start?

It starts with asking plenty of questions.

You need to understand how the business operates, what they're carrying, where they're travelling and what success looks like for them. Sometimes the truck a customer thinks they need isn't actually the best fit.

We spend time working through different scenarios using Isuzu's vehicle specification and weight calculation software. It allows us to compare axle loads, chassis lengths, body configurations and payload outcomes before a decision is made.

It's about giving customers confidence that they're investing in the right truck, not just the truck they think they need.

Q: How do you ensure great customer experiences continue after delivery?

The relationship is only just beginning once the customer takes delivery.

At Webster Trucks we hold regular Isuzu Care meetings where customer support activities are discussed, and every dealership has dedicated people focused on customer care.

Things don't always go perfectly. That's reality.

But I've always believed it's how you respond to a challenge that defines the relationship.

If you approach every issue alongside your customer instead of across the table from them, you usually arrive at the right solution together.

Q: Can you share an example of your team going above and beyond for a customer?

Honestly, there are too many to count.

Our technicians are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. While most people are asleep, they're often working roadside to get trucks back into service.

Our parts team supports them every step of the way. If there's a component in the warehouse that could safely get someone moving again, they'll do everything they can to help.

Those are the people who rarely get the recognition they deserve.

Everyone enjoys fresh food on supermarket shelves and coffee waiting at the café each morning, but few people see the work happening overnight to make that possible. Without trucks, Australia stops, and without dedicated service and parts teams, many of those trucks wouldn't keep moving.

Q: What separates a good customer experience from a great one?

Care and communication.

You have to understand your customer's business and the pressures they're under, then be flexible enough to support them.

I've always believed that if our customers succeed, then we'll succeed alongside them. Focus on delivering the best possible outcome for the customer and everything else tends to fall into place.

Q: From a sales perspective, what makes representing Isuzu Trucks different?

Isuzu didn't become Australia's truck market leader by accident.

Customers trust the reliability, engineering, safety, compliance and breadth of the product range, but they're also buying into the people behind the brand, local parts support, service agreements and ongoing customer care.

We're not simply selling a truck. In many cases we're helping protect somebody's livelihood.

That's why getting the specification right and supporting customers long after delivery is so important.

Repeat business isn't won on delivery day. It's earned over the years that follow.

Q: Why do you think customers continue choosing Isuzu?

Reliability and consistency.

Customers know what they're getting. They trust the product; they trust the support and they trust the people behind it.

That confidence has been built over decades.

Q: Finally, what's your advice for anyone investing in their next truck?

Do it once and do it right.

The purchase price fades into the background when you're looking back eight or ten years later at a truck that's reliably earned its keep every day.

Spend the time getting the specification right from the beginning. Consider the right GVM, performance, safety technologies, body configuration and driver assistance systems.

If you get those decisions right up front, you'll end up with a truck that's safer, more productive and ultimately more profitable for your business.
